Amrut Distilleries: Exploring the Soul of Indian Whisky

For those who love exploring different whiskies from around the world, there's a special one from India that you should definitely have – Amrut. It's a name that carries a lot of tradition, innovation, and a unique taste that makes it stand out. In this journey, let's uncover what Amrut is all about, its main whiskies, its interesting history, and a peek into what's coming next.

The History of Amrut

To truly appreciate Amrut, we must understand it's rich history. Amrut Distilleries is as old as the history of independent India itself. In 1948, under the name of Amrut Laboratories, the late Shri J.N. Radhakrishna, laid the foundation of a distillery that would later become a symbol of India's whisky craftsmanship.

Under the visionary leadership of Shri, Amrut Distilleries rapidly solidified its position as a prominent supplier of Indian Made Liquor (IML) in the Defence Market.

The untimely passing of J.N. Radhakrishna Rao Jagdale in 1976 marked a pivotal moment for Amrut Distilleries. The reins of leadership passed on to his son, Shri Neelakanta Rao, the current Chairman and Managing Director. Building upon his late father's legacy, Shri Neelakanta Rao steered Amrut Distilleries into a multinational brand renowned not only for the exceptional quality of its products but also for advocating transparent practices within the IML industry.

Amrut Distilleries expanded its portfolio to include the Rectification and Distillation of Rum in the 1960s. The 1970s witnessed the distillation of Brandy, marking a strategic move to cater to the evolving Indian market.

The 80s saw Amrut venture into the distillation of Malts, setting the stage for the creation of class-leading whiskies. However the breakthrough came with the launch of the Amrut Single Malt in the UK in 2004, a turning point that catapulted Indian whisky onto the global stage.

In the subsequent years, Amrut continued to innovate, introducing expressions like the Fusion, Peated Malt, some cask strengths, followed by a handful of Limited Edition releases. The distillery's commitment to quality, coupled with a willingness to push boundaries, gathered international recognition, making Amrut a name to reckon with in the world of whisky.
